Can you give us an introduction to BASE?
Hi! We are Amy and Emma, Empowered Movement Experts and Co-Founders of BASE. BASE is a non-judgemental space where you can come and work out safely and effectively in a fun, uplifting environment under the guidance of specialists. We have spaces in Dorset, London and Hastings, with our HQ being our BASE Space Studio in Parkstone.
BASE was born from a desire to bring safe and effective physical movement to every single body, regardless of ability, age or size. We believe very strongly that movement should be inclusive. Our objective is to break down perceived limiting barriers that stand in the way of some individuals being able to feel empowered in their own body and mind.
Can you tell us a bit about your reason for starting your own fitness studio?
We both felt that we just couldn’t find a work out environment that suited what we wanted. Having loved fitness all of our adult lives we’ve experimented with tonnes of movement disciplines in a range of different environments, some which worked for us and some which really didn’t – a few leading to avoidable injury and frustration.
We wanted a space where the instructors were specialists in their field and the focus was on technique and form, we also didn’t want to compromise on the fun aspect of working out.
We decided if we couldn’t find it, we’d create it! And so BASE and our philosophy of Empowered Movement was born. We bridge the gap that lies between movement in a clinical setting and larger gym environments, where generic programmes are often offered. Who says you can’t have it all!
What would you like to see more and less of in the fitness industry?
We’d love to see a broader cohort of people being represented by the fitness industry. There is an abundance of the ‘perfect’, able body doing various workouts but there seems to be a distinct lack of fitness professionals offering uplifting and inspirational content for ‘everyday’ people: people who perhaps live with illness, injury, disability or who are of an older generation. For example, just because you have a lower back sensitivity doesn’t mean that you can’t work out in an energised environment, it just means that there are certain exercises you should avoid doing, and some you should try to include. We’d love the fitness industry to celebrate all bodies, thus reaffirming the message that exercise is accessible to every body, not just the ‘Instagram’ body.
We believe that the more people that are represented, the less barriers to movement there will be. We would also love to eradicate the ‘no pain, no gain’ mentality and ‘a one size fits all’ approach to fitness and exercise.
What brings us joy is watching our clients thrive and walk out of BASE with a smile on their face and renewed belief in their incredible bodies.
BASE is a hybrid space, somewhere between a clinical setting and a gym, where our focus is 100% you.
Our clients range from their 20’s through to their 90’s and we love celebrating the smallest of wins to the biggest of achievements with each and every individual we work with. Our BASE Space is special: we cannot wait to welcome anyone who thinks this might be exactly what their body needs and deserves too.
