Escape to the Country
Finding tranquillity in the heart of the English countryside: A day at Chewton Glen, Relais & Châteaux hotel and spa. Words by Bethany Piper.
We’re all well acquainted with the cold, wet weather gifted to us by the UK each winter. Whether we’re rushing around doing last minute Christmas shopping or attempting to stay warm and dry whilst completing chores in the depths of January, it’s easy to get used to that underlying feeling of discomfort.
Of course, it’s not all bad - there’s honestly nothing better than a hot shower after getting drenched walking the dog, or curling up in front of a fire with a book (or your Nintendo Switch, if you’re like me). This feeling of escape, of relaxation in a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of the season, is something we were keen to capture in this issue. So, of course, this more than warranted a trip into the New Forest to the luxury spa at Chewton Glen Hotel.
You wouldn’t think that driving ten miles east of Bournemouth would bring you to a place so charming, so soothing, so peaceful. A picture of English elegance, Chewton Glen dates back to the 18th century when the author Captain Marryat would holiday in the country home, finding inspiration in its surroundings. Since the late 20th century, the house has been welcoming guests to its delightful luxury hotel and spa so that they might too find inspiration in and around its historical walls.
Our day began with a warm greeting from the spa's staff, who could not have been more welcoming. We instantly knew we’d be in for a treat! We had arrived bright and early for our spa day, which meant we could take advantage of the incredible breakfast buffet that had something for everyone - organic Greek yoghurts, pastries, granola, a huge selection of fresh fruit - and of course, some good, old-fashioned toast. I’m Coeliac, and the last thing I wanted on my spa day was to stress about whether or not I’d have something to eat - to my delight, each item was clearly marked with all allergens, so I could tuck in just like everyone else. Plus, the granola was gluten free - a true rarity!
After we’d washed down our breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, we were led to the changing rooms, where we could step out of our everyday attire and into a plush, white robe in the privacy of individual changing areas. The changing rooms are a far cry from the changing rooms at your local leisure centre: they were spotless, with wooden accents, secure lockers, and fully equipped dressing tables complete with Dyson hair dryers.
The luxury and quality of the spa’s facilities didn’t stop there: hidden around the corner was a steam room, a sauna, and a foot spa, which we made full use of before we ventured out into the main pool areas. We decided to start with the incredible hydrotherapy pool, which featured a variety of jets, plus
heated stone beds.
We even braved the cold for a dip in the outdoor hot tub, which was wonderful - the feeling of plunging into the warm water whilst you look out at the crisp countryside was unmatched.
Once we’d become very relaxed prunes, we set up camp on the comfortable loungers beside the main indoor pool. The room itself is impressive - high ceilings with huge, white columns and floor-to-ceiling windows. We relaxed here, reading our books, until our stomachs told us it was time for lunch.
Lunch was even better than breakfast, with plates upon plates of deliciously dressed salads, cured meats, and smoked salmon. They even had a traditional warming oven packed full of jacket potatoes! Again, each item was clearly labelled with any allergens.
After lunch, we had some time before our massage and facial treatment, so we curled back up on the loungers by the pool and enjoyed a much-needed nap. When our appointments rolled around, we were led to a quiet, darkened waiting room where we could lay back whilst we filled in our information forms which would allow the therapists to tailor the treatment to our specific needs.
The treatments took place in private rooms which had a wonderful atmosphere thanks to the quiet music. The therapist took time at the beginning of the treatment to discuss what I wanted, plus any health conditions, problem areas or concerns. We started with the back massage, which was pure bliss. I have chronic back pain, so after the massage, my therapist applied some soothing balm before we began the facial treatment.
The facial began with a thorough cleansing and exfoliation, customised to my combination skin type. This was actually my first time having a facial, and suffice to say I’m looking forward to my next one! A series of masks and serums followed, each designed to address different aspects of skin health, whether it was hydration, radiance, or rejuvenation. For days afterwards, my skin felt incredibly soft - a feeling I will forever be chasing! The facial was a perfect complement to the earlier massage.
Chewton Glen Spa had delivered on its promise of providing an oasis of calm and well-being in the heart of the English countryside. It was a day that allowed us to escape the stresses of everyday life and look inward, focusing on ourselves for a few precious hours. If you're seeking a sanctuary of tranquillity and indulgence, Chewton Glen Spa is a destination that will exceed your every expectation.
