A conversation with Mahesh Hayward, founder of The Hairy Palm—a barbershop and a sanctuary for mental well-being in Bournemouth.
Hi Mahesh! Lovely to meet you. How did your journey in the hair industry begin?
Firstly, thank you for featuring me in this magazine, what wonderful work you are doing to bring people together!
In 1991, I walked into Marc Young Salon in the Dolphin Centre in Poole and a wonderful man, Malcom Barker, interviewed me for the job of 1st Year Barber Junior. Malcolm became my friend and mentor until he passed away in September 2022. He was probably my first male role model.
Since then, I have been so blessed during my career. I have travelled and worked in the US, Australia, Germany, Spain and most recently Sweden where I was a judge for the 2023 Barber of the Year Awards in Stockholm. I’ve enjoyed some amazing moments on stages around the world. When working in Austin, Texes I cut hair for the band Muse and their crew backstage during their tour! Sometimes you just have to say yes at the right time.
I’ve always loved music, clothes, people and being creative, so hairdressing was a good choice to tick all the boxes.
Don’t get me wrong, it is long hours on your feet all day, but the smile on a client’s face when they are happy with your service is worth every varicose vein.
As a men's mental health advocate, what motivated you to bring the element of wellness to The Hairy Palm?
Everyone's mental health is important, but as a man, I have focused on the gender I represent and can empathise with closely. As a father, husband, son and now grandfather, I believe we need to look after each other, body and soul.
During my 30s I lost my way, my marriage broke down, my mental and physical health was at a very low edge, and I even considered taking my own life on more than one occasion. I was drinking heavily, I had no self-respect and it was only having children that kept me from taking myself out of the picture. I know this is dark, and maybe triggering to read, but from shadow comes the light!
Meeting men in the barbershop, exchanging stories, I knew where some of these men were in their lives and I knew that I could help them find the tools to help themselves. Self care, self love and non-judgement are key to healing. The barbershop is a doorway to the men's group I run, with open heart and ears, listening and holding space is the medicine.
Being an environmental activist, how do you promote sustainability within your profession?
Ha ha! Yes, I suppose I am an activist! That badge of honour was earned when I spent 19 hours in a London police cell whilst working alongside Extinction Rebellion. I’ve always been very aware of my impact on the environment. Even when I was at school, I was interested in the world and our interaction with nature. I went plant-based nine years ago and joined rallies to raise awareness about global warming - that’s when I knew a single voice can and has made a difference.
The ethos from my home influenced my work. I quickly became aware that the products we use and sell make a difference. I have always tried to keep water usage to a minimum, our cleaning products are plant-based where possible, and we even upcycle our hair waste. It’s not just what you say you do, but about leading by action. That’s the best way to promote a green and sustainable life and work space.
What’s the future looking like for the Hairy Palm?
Since January this year, I’ve changed the way I work! A new approach to my hairdressing and barbering. Clients no longer book a specific service, now they can book a one hour or ninety minute time slot. This way I can provide a full service for my clients, give them the experience they deserve, and I can work at a slower and more mindful pace. This is beneficial to me as a stylist and the client too, we all get the time that is required. I provide a face steam and head massage, fresh Badhand coffee, time to talk, be listened to, and enjoy the experience of self care! I’ve also set up the option of a “quiet appointment” for those who don't wish to chat and just like the haircut, beard trim and coffee in peace, and for those who struggle socially.
With the men’s groups… well, this is my seventh year and I will continue to hold space, every week, for men who wish to focus on all aspects of self care, awareness and being a great ambassador of positive masculinity. @the_hairy_palm /
