Vino Vibes
Bournemouth's natural wine renaissance: Justin Cambray's Vino Casero leads the way.
Hi Justin! Can you give us an introduction to Vino Casero?
Hey guys, Vino Casero is Bournemouth's home for natural wine. A thirty foot mobile bar made completely from reclaimed material as well as an online store. We’ve been popping up all over Dorset since earlier this year trying to open up and de-mystify the world of wine. Our aim is to bring wine to everyone, take the pressure off from those daunting massive leather bound menus and bring a more down to earth friendly approach to the world of wine.
We’d love to know your story! What is your background that led you up to this point?
I’ve always worked in hospitality and had a love for night time culture so Vino Casero is an extension of that. When I moved back to Bournemouth after a few years away, whilst it was huge in London, I noticed that Bournemouth didn't have much of a natural wine scene so I started up a wine delivery service during lockdown; ‘Good Vino’ and people loved it.
Once lockdown was over we took a pause with Good Vino as real life resumed but myself and a few friends would still head to the local wine bars and I noticed every time I would be handed the menu and given the honour (pressure) of ordering for the table. I just thought; ‘wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could just know and pick what they liked’ and Vino Casero was born. My business partners Josh and Jamie from The Syrup Room are our brains behind the build and making everything look stunning whilst I curate our drinks selection.
What would you recommend off the wine menu for the upcoming festive season?
When I think of winter I automatically think of big bold reds. Sangiovese would be my top choice this winter, bright with acidity whilst high in tannins. It's a really rich, earthy, winter warmer in my books.
Being a natural wine company though we can’t not recommend orange wine (it's all the rage apparently). Orange wine is essentially white wine that is kept in contact with the grape skins for a prolonged amount of time which gives it a very different texture and flavour profile to your average white. I’d recommend our Entre Vinyes - Oniric Brisat, aged with the grape skins for 18 days and then aged in clay amphoras for 6 months gives this wine great tannins whilst keeping its floral and citrus flavours.
What is the future of Vino Casero?
Vino Casero is still in its early stages but we have big plans for the brand! We have a full summer season booked in with events with the bar next year as well as our first bookings for 2025! We have big plans for the online shop with subscriptions now available.
We are also currently on the look out for a more permanent home for Vino Casero to add to our portfolio in 2024 so keep your eyes peeled!
