Hey Studio Studio
Studio Studio is a multidisciplinary creative studio, based in the BadHand coffee roastery building. We are made up of Gem Mordle, a ceramicist and owner of Home Thrown studio; Bridie Cheeseman, an illustrator; Yun Hee Choi, an international jewellery designer and Jake Williams, illustrator and designer. We balance our individual practices, but often come together to collaborate on creative projects.
Bridie and Gem came together for a recent example; Tiles Told, a series of narratively driven illustrated ceramic tiles designed for home interior and public facing murals.
From working in our multi creative studio, Yun has integrated a unique ceramic range into her new Empathy jewellery collection.
Home Thrown ceramics are playful, irregular and simple. Drawing on simplicity, organic shapes and textures, influenced by Scandinavian and Japanese design. Gem has designed pieces for Lush, Badhand Coffee, Tom’s Studio, Fill co., Papersmiths, Thyme Hotel, with features in 91 Magazine, Roberts Radio and Olive Magazine.
Bridie’s illustration work is bright and playful, often exploring themes of history, oddity, storytelling and humour. She illustrates across editorial, narrative and textile based platforms; online, for social media and in print, working with clients from Aquila Magazine and Oxford University Press to Brooklyn Magazine and Hallmark. She enjoys a balance of working digitally, but also loves to break away from the screen, illustrating large scale murals for public spaces.
Yun has designed jewellery globally as Chois for the last 22 years. She began her career in China, working as a jewellery design production manager for Liz Claiborne, before moving to the design department. Moving to the UK in 2010, she created a vibrant community based out of her shop on Brick Lane in London. Clients include, JLo, Juicy Couture, Givenchy, Topshop, J Crew, Ann Taylor, Marks and Spencer, All Saints and Paradise Row London. Yun’s primary focus is on designing contemporary mixed media jewellery for her own brand, Chois England.
Jake’s illustration and design features a strong focus on colour and character, balancing playful concepts with dynamic movement filled designs. His wide ranging practice has spanned projects including large scale commercial campaigns for the likes of The Wall Street Journal, Samsung and Nespresso to advertising, branding and packaging for Formula 1, Facebook and Jellyfish Gin. Recently Jake has been creating fun expressive, character driven visual identities for brands both new and established.
Gem met Joel at BadHand when he first bought the warehouse, and when it came to the latest renovations last year we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the space; the grassroots community and being amongst other small businesses who share the same values as us has been really inspiring and we can’t wait to see how this grows.
As as studio we’re always keen to integrate our work further into the local community. Through creative projects, collaborations, exhibitions and events.
We always love to hear about new projects, come and say hi- funnily enough we have good coffee. ;)
