Keeping It Real

How Sally Molloy danced her way into world championship on her own terms. Words by Hollie Garraway.

The iconic phrase ‘Keep the Faith’ coined by the Northern Soul movement is epitomised by Dorset-based dancer Sally Molloy.

With her effervescent energy and notable social media following, she is wholeheartedly dedicated to mastering her craft and sharing her passion across dance floors, all over the U.K. and on a regular weekly basis in Bournemouth ballroom venues.

Crowned the winner of the World Northern Soul Dance Championship in 2022, Sally’s ability to express herself alongside the fast tempo of long-cherished soulful syncopated beats has garnered her well-deserved recognition for her contributions to the scene.

From appearances on the BBC’s ‘The One Show’, to starring in the official music video for ‘Keep on Talking’ by Texas, Sally is a trailblazer and valued member of our local community, having moved from the north to the south to enrich grassroots groups here.

Now based in the BCP area and holding space for workshops, tours, and classes, Sally is a shining example of how to live in true purpose by following her heart with reverence, authenticity, and charisma, creating her own syllabus and dancing to the beat of her own drum. We had the pleasure of talking to Sally about her work, values, and her incredible career so far.

What can we expect from your upcoming tour?

The tour is visiting over 20 cities and towns around the UK. It is a 2-hour workshop where you will learn the foundations of the dance style as well as transition steps, personalised tips and mainly the confidence to let go. Northern Soul is improvised, never choreographed or routine. It is all music-led, and I am very passionate about that side of things. This was part of the appeal for me when first delving into the dance style. Not having to be perfect or regimented - it's a free style of dance. So, it's important people know that during the workshop you will learn steps, but it's about having a play in a safe environment with me helping you along the way. It's all about FUN and there's no right or wrong. My workshops cater to all levels as we will essentially work from the ground up. But what will be the most important aspect of the workshop is the music.

What is it about Bournemouth that you feel has contributed to the popularity of your workshops and classes here?

Bournemouth has a dedicated Northern Soul scene, with events being held every weekend in local Social Clubs and ballrooms. I was surprised by this after moving here 2 years ago as I had always assumed it was a Northern thing. I have been told by locals that they used to get a coach to Wigan back in the day. This level of dedication really surprised me, but I think that's the main reason my classes are so welcomed here - that dedication. Most people who come to my classes attend every week without fail: some even travel from London. But Northern Soul music does that. Different to other styles of music and dance, Northern Soul music creates community and a sense of duty to the music. I love that.

What are your hopes for the future of Northern Soul dancing?

I hope that more people get into the music first. It doesn't concern me what age group, anyone and everyone should be able to have access to Northern Soul. I hope the style of Northern Soul dance continues to grow and people have the confidence to get out on the floor. The music will live forever, and I believe the dance is an extension to the music. Spread the Faith.
