Jacob Cramp
In conversation with local photographer Jacob Cramp.
Hi Jacob, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your style of work.
I’m 21, I currently live and study in Bournemouth and spend most of my time either taking pictures or printing in the darkroom, which I've been doing for a few years now. My work revolves around daily life, things I find interesting or are more commonly overlooked. Personally I’d like to think that my work, specifically my portraits convey a sense of personality, identity and presence. There's no real meaning behind my landscapes other than being interested in the location. Usually there is something unique about it which draws me to capture it on film and paper.
What is your biggest inspiration?
This is a good question because my inspirations are always changing, David Hockney and Bowie spring to mind but my main inspirations come from all over; magazines, books, Instagram… anything that can visually portray new ideas or work. Undoubtedly my friends play a huge role because it is fascinating to see other peoples creative output. It inspires me to see people creating their own work in whatever form they choose to use– it’s so nice to see anyone be passionate about the work that they create. My surroundings are another source of inspiration because there are so many places dotted around Dorset that I find interesting. All of the rural villages and small towns which are almost forgotten about inspire me to produce my own interpretation of them. Being obsessed with a subject definitely helps portray it as I feel I can make more of a personal connection with the given subject and hopefully an audience too!
What are you looking forward to in the future?
It's exciting to think about things that I want to take photographs of in the future, I’m always asking myself what could I do next? Or what could I run into? Finishing my degree is definitely one thing I'm looking forward to. Although I really enjoy studying in Bournemouth I’d like to go further a field and expand on what I already do. I can't really say what I’m looking forward to because in all honesty I have no idea, all I know is that whatever future holds I’ll be taking it one step at a time.
