Bravery

How would you define bravery? It's the quality or state of being courageous, bold, or fearless in the face of danger, difficulty, or adversity. Bravery involves the willingness to confront and endure challenges, risks, or threats with determination and resolve, often for a greater good or principle. This virtue manifests in various forms, from acts of physical valour to  demonstrations of moral courage or resilience in the face of personal struggles.

For me, bravery finds a living embodiment in the story of Toby Gutteridge. Born in South Africa but raised in the US and UK, Toby's journey led him to join the Royal Marines and later the Poole-based special forces. During his second posting to Afghanistan, he was shot through the neck during a night raid on a compound. The bullet, fired from an AK-47, shattered his C2 vertebrae, instantly paralysing him from the neck down.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Toby shared, "I'd lost my entire identity - my job, my career, everything I'd built myself on. Joining the Marines was all very physical, and you build your identity around that." Despite the immense physical and psychological toll, Toby didn't succumb to despair. He pursued education, earning GCSEs, A-levels, and eventually graduating with a first-class business degree from Bournemouth University.

Toby's resilience and determination led him to establish an extreme sports clothing brand, aptly named Bravery, reflecting his outlook on life. "Starting Bravery is a symbol of waking up each day, choosing courage, and building your dreams no matter what adversity you face," he explains. "It has meaning–it’s my story."

At its heart, Bravery empowers individuals to embrace challenges, pursue ambitions, and confront obstacles with unwavering courage. The newly opened Bravery H.Q in Poole embodies this ethos, fostering a community united by shared values. With the laid-back spirit of California and a touch of rock n’ roll flair, the venue is alive with activity, showcasing an array of surfboards, wetsuits, skateboards, motocross gear, and a diverse collection of men's and women's apparel. The result is a showcase that captures the essence of Bravery's empowering message.

"I was an avid motocross rider and surfer," Toby shared, "and Bravery gives me a chance to still be involved with the sports I love." Within the space, Bravery offers a coffee shop, co-working space, and meeting room hire, making it a versatile and inclusive environment available for events.

Bravery's ethos serves as a reminder that bravery is not the absence of hardship but the resilience to face adversity and rise back up after getting knocked down by life. The brand's commitment to superior quality, eco-friendly, and modern clothing aligns with values of responsibility and integrity, making it a symbol of courage and inspiration. @bravery_hq / bravery.co.uk
